What is the application deadline?
All application materials (application and essay responses) is due by 12pm (noon) on Monday, January 31, 2022.   

How will I know that my application has been submitted?
Upon submission, you will receive a confirmation message that your application has been received.
 
What happens after I submit my application?
After you submit your application, it will be reviewed to determine qualifications.  If you meet the initial qualifications (GPA requirements, in good conduct standing, and completed application) of the RA position, you will be invited to sign up for an individual interview. Check your email for that interview invite on or around February 3, 2022.  
 
If I am hired, do I get to choose the building I am placed in?
No. All selection and placement decisions are determined by the staff within Residence Education. 

What are Living Learning Communities?
All University of Iowa students who live in the residence halls have a chance to apply to live in a Living Learning Community (LLC). There are 15 LLC's students can choose from in addition to our New Student, Honors, UI REACH, and Returning communities covering a wide variety of major and interest based themes.  You can learn more information about the living learning communities at housing.uiowa.edu/communities 

What is the role of the RA in LLCs?
As the RA of an LLC, you help create a cohesive and welcoming community around your LLC theme. RAs work with the Hall Coordinator, the Coordinator for Living Learning Communities, and campus partners to help facilitate the LLC experience on their floor. 

What is the Residence Education Model? 
The Residence Education Model (REM) is our curriculum that we follow in order to have intentional interactions with each resident in our halls. These interactions are focused on guiding residents to learn about themselves, discover relationships, and engage in community. 

Will I be able to go home on weekends?
Yes.  While there may be weekend commitments that require you to remain on campus, there will be opportunities to take time away and leave campus on weekends.  The number of weekends is determined at the discretion of the Hall Coordinator or designee. 
 
What are the dates I will be working?
You must return to campus for August training, which the dates will be between August 1 - August 12, 2022. You will also need to work Residence Hall Move-In and On Iowa! which will be between August 12 - 21, 2022. There may also be certain commitments prior to Fall Training that you will be asked to participate in. Your RA position ends Sunday, May 14, 2023 at noon.
 
Will I have to work over break periods? (fall, winter, spring)
All residence halls are open during fall, winter and spring breaks including holidays.  You will be asked to be available to work during these break periods by your Hall Coordinator or designee and if you choose to do so you will receive extra compensation.
 
What is the GPA requirement?
All candidates must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 during the term of employment. Each semester of employment, individuals must achieve a minimum of a 2.0 semester GPA.
 
Can I do more than the RA job?
You are allowed an additional 10 hours of involvement as an RA (on or off campus) pending supervisor approval. Resident Assistants cannot concurrently serve on the Undergraduate Student Government Cabinet, including Speaker or Speaker Pro Tempore, during the 2022-2023 academic year. 
 
Can I student teach while I am an RA?
We do not allow Resident Assistants to student teach while serving in the RA position.
 
Can I have a summer internship and/or I would like to take summer classes?
You are allowed to complete a summer internship, however it is required that you move in and are available for Fall Training. Internships or classes that run past this time will not be allowed.
 
Can I study abroad and still be an RA in the same year?
RAs are expected to be employed for an entire academic year. Winter study abroad requests are handled on a case by case basis.
 
I am graduating in December.  Can I be an RA?
No, RAs are expected to be employed for an entire academic year. 

Will the RA position impact my financial aid?
Potentially. You should contact the office of financial aid right away to learn about how the RA position could potentially impact your financial aid package. You should also do this if you are a student athlete that receives scholarships as well.
